Iterative Design – cycle

The main thing that comes first before any  designing is a process of iterative design which is a methodological approach that mainly includes creating prototype and the around the circle path to development, this will be done over and over again until the  product has reach of it highest standard, from getting back audiences’s requirements and advice. i will be following this as to get my head around Design iteration, and this will be shown through out the  process  of  this unit. with researches and productions.

Research on simplicity- John Maeda

I went on reading this book Laws of Simplicity by a designer call John maeda.. I found that this book extremely helpful,  as it has help me to make a decision on which path i should take in-order to create my project. while reading the book it has given lots of ideas that will link into my media theory.

I was also inspired by in one of his chapter where he spoke about space, how an environment that we eat in can effect the way out food taste. ”

I once met a designer friend in a quiet Paris flat with white walls, white surfaces, and white furniture. A lunch of aestheti- cally prepared sushi was served. Red tuna, pink salmon, white squid, silvery mackerel, and a sliver of green leaf boldly engaged my visual senses as I took the entire scene into my mind. I reached to my chopsticks to begin, when my friend said, “The taste of this meal is aΩected by the room we sit in.” True. With everything around me in pure white including the plate upon which the sushi was served, the thin slabs of raw fish atop the fist-sized mass of white rice appeared to float in space. I could imagine the taste to be very diΩerent in an environment that was appointed with diΩerent dishes, table, overall deco- rum, and even diΩerent people. Ambience is the proverbial “secret sauce” to any great meal or memorable interaction. Creating white space—or, translating that to a room, “clean space”—enables the foreground to stand out from the background”.

We have been set a small brief which included us to work in small groups of four.  this brief was mainly aimed for preparing us for our main individual processing interaction project.  the brief was to design a poster that was based around dorset, that dorset were proud to be independent. just before begin we started with the iteration processes which were Requirement and gathering, Analysis, design and implementation and testing. the very first stage of creating the poster was to gather up informations and ideas, researching different reasons why Dorset should be an independent county.

The main thing that we was heading towards in order to create the independent Dorset poster, which we though was the strongest was Tourism and Agriculture. but later on as we have done further research between our group we have decided that. Tourism and Agriculture was not Dorset’s strongest income  sources, we also found out that Dorset was not much of  provider for England. and England aren’t really depending on Dorset very much. we have took our selves away form (how is England depending on dorset) and just focus on how can Dorset be independent form England? this was much more easier to approach as Dorset is know for being rich in providing RAW materials, popular tourism, culture history of England which leads to the birth place of England.

This below was the first few sketches that we came up with as a group, just to get and idea of who we are attracting and our main target audience, and just some ideas to get a good starting point for the poster design.

The poster on the right was based mainly on a typography style that we were going for just outlining the strongest parts of dorset, and the 2nd poster (on the left) was ‘calk man’ which representation of dorset, we have spoof the  calk man a little by instead of him holding a club. we have got him holding a flag of Dorset and standing on the map or Dorset. we though this poster of the calk man was a good ideas as our target audience could relate and recognise the calk man.


As we have progress onto the next stage of designing the poster we have decided that we are going to go with the typography poster instead of the calk man. they were man reasons why we have chosen to do this one of the reason why was the it was a very popular choice for every group and was being over uses and after the audience has seen the first three will get bored of seeing the imaginary. but the design theme of the typography poster was much more acceptable with the use of vibrant colours a large bold text that informs the audience what message the poster is sending. and it will give out more informations that just a post of the chalk man.


this was our final design of the Dorset independence poster. i feel that we as a group has reached out of this poster, because of the positive feed back that we have got back from our audience, the designing of the poster was very original and unique compare to the other poster that was up on display. and in terms of the location that it was on displayed on.  Into the  total result of reflection of the poster

I we got a feeling as a group that we could of made the imagery stand out more as an independent person.  for example we from once of the feed back feed that we got was the person in the middle that is holding hands with the rest of the figures was not symbolising independent but more of dependent .

Space in Weymouth house.

In-order for us to get a general idea of where would  be the best place for our poster to be presented. As a group we went in the weymouth house foyer a and calculated the best place.  the simple spaces we were looking was somewhere that was clean and most of all the a space that was most busiest with the traffic of people. and people can see it easily with out going out of their way too much.

we wanted keep a record of who will be our main target audience, the majority of the people who uses the space more frequently. and try see if we can get a large verity of audiences to utilize the space in the main foyer of weymouth house.                                                                   From our record which we’ve got within half hour. we did a rough estimate of the ages of pupil.

18-24 = 30

25-30= 18

31-60 = 10

and this was during peak times when the majority of people were on break/lunch we have cleared up the most of our audience/ views will be the younger generation so mainly the people who are most likely not to be involved in the message that we were trying to portray.


distance between students/staff we observed generally didn’t stop to interact or engage with the poster. There was occurrence  when some of them  did, but this was mainly staffs.

Out of the first 20 people who walked passed they were only 6 people  that took notice of the dorset poster 4 of them being staff and 2 being students who stopped and look at the poster ‘but i believe that two student who stopped only stop because i was actually taking this picture of my poster’. ‘below’

However i believe the main thing that was taking the attention away from the poster was with the other media activity. for example the news on the T.V. So the location we choose was not as great as we’ve forecast.

Graphics and visuals absorbing the space. 

i found that the T.V  has diverted the majority of our audiences attention.

  • The amount of other poster that was surrounding the poster that are at a much bigger scale.
  • Much brighter colours
  • The visual motion of the TV.
  • And various other screen to grab the audiences attention.

So in total the space was not an ideal location to grab our viewers  attention.


As i was  doing my research on special effects and software similar to processing i have came across this amazing video of Beyonce :)…… well apart from her seductive performance..           what i found amazing was the digital effect, live action, animation, graphics imagery, that was done by a Digital Agency who are based in new york.

  • I liked that all the animation was in perfect timing with her dance moves.
  • how all the effects came in to tunes of the music

Also how each verse of her song can paint an effect for example  “run the world” and as the verse played she had managed to wrap the effects that was surrounding her turned into a globe and spinning in her hand.
