Design Iterations – Evaluation

I have created processing interaction for the display of Weymouth house project, I have created an interaction with the aim to give the audience/the user a sense of feeling of how it feels for people who are in poverty that are now making their own way out of poverty from a small community by interacting with the rest of the world from just one small space for example, a very poor village in Africa by using the social media at a platform/world stage. Using an openCV library within in processing to do this interaction.

Which tracks the face of the of the user and represents them as the rectangle box on the T.V Screen, the rectangle box which represents the audience was transparent and the opacity of the box was at 25% was hovering over the a map of the world as the user interact with it. As the user interact with the interaction that was on the screen which means manoeuvring left to right and also back and forth the rectangle box will pick up their movement and pan across the world map for example if they were to move from left to right the that represent the audience will move over form North America to China, also if they move further back the rectangle will move to the lower the part of the world, This gives the audience/user a feeling that they can travel across the world from just a few steps in a small area.

I was surprise with how easy the audience/users found it to interact with the project that was displayed on the on the screen and that they have found the very engaging and that they felt that it was very relevant to the concept that I was aiming towards, The main strength of the piece was that is was very much related to how powerful the social media is and the control that is gives to people who are less fortunate but however found that the main weakness was that that the camera will pick and thing that recognise the shading of a face even if its a reflection on a furniture, also I would of liked it to pick up every angle of the audience/users face and that they don’t have always look directly into the camera. Although I do feel that I have made a difference in the that way people see reality and open a wider eyes of the engaging and how much large of an impact a Meditated Environment can have on people in poverty’s life style.

However I feel that the project went very well but I found I difficult to come up with an interaction that will relate towards my media theory and they work that we have done throughout the year.

What I would improve for the future of this project form the feeds back that I have receive my audience said that it was easy to see that the interaction was about the world. However possibly change the rectangle box for a symbol which represents technology the example the at symbol (@).

WHAT DID I LEARN? I have learn that if you are designing an interaction for the use of the public that it needs to be in a very good location that that will give them the freedom to let them express them selves and to be made simple and a fun interaction.

I feel that having completed this unit that i have demonstrate

  • An ability to adopt an iterative, evidence-based approach to digital media design and production
  • Originality, creativity and professionalism in the conception, pitching, design, management and realisation of digital media artefacts.
  • The ability to work effectively as an individual as well as part of a production team.
  • The ability to analyse and reflect on iterative production processes by drawing on relevant intellectual and professional debates.

Design Iterations – User Testing in Weymouth House (Entrance)

I decided to properly user test my interaction in the Weymouth house entrance, a space where I have specially chosen for my interacting to be displayed on in-order to grab the right audience attention and at a specific time where its was not very busy as, it can effect the interaction between my audience/user because the camera will pick up just any face that may not have time to interact with the piece in the in the space where is it displayed, I am looking to reach mainly the young adult audiences, as they tend to be less busy and would more time to take a second look at the interaction.

As you can see on the in the video above is shows you the audiences/user and users who are interacting with the interacting that I have created for the this project brief, the audience are mainly students well they both seems like students ages between 18- 21, as you can see that they have easily picked up the one of the main purpose for interacting that is being displayed. I do like the fact that they are interacting with it the way I wanted them too. For example moving forwards back wards left right in-order to go to different countries. However I don’t feel that they get the true meaning of the concept that my design was trying to portray.

Before fully completing my project I Course friend testing my interaction. I have explained the basic concept of the interaction to him for example I have explained to him that “this interaction give you a slight experience about how the people in poverty feels using the (Mediated Space) which is the social media in-order to connect with the world and the power of freedom that they get from just one room.

1. How did you physically find yourself interaction with the display?

I found that by interacting with the piece i was able to see how i was represented in a location within the map of the world showing what countries i appeared at from my movement.

2. What did you find most impressive about the interaction?

What impressed me was the fact that that square became bigger and smaller depending how far or close i was to the interactive piece.

3. What emotion did you feel while interacting with the display?

I found it interesting enough to walk about from small steps of side to side feeling i was moving country within a matter of seconds.

4. What could I do in-order to improve the interaction.

Instead of using a square i recon you could use a coloured dot to make it seem like the person whose interacting with the screen is smaller within the map showing you as a population within the world throughout the billions of people.

Prototype Reflection.

I was very pleased with the feed back that i receive from the prototype testing. although there’s a few things that i maybe need  to change, for example  the opacity on on the rectangle box. but i very pleased with the users  feed back on question three (What emotion did you feel while interacting with the display? “I found it interesting enough to walk about from small steps of side to side feeling i was moving country within a matter of seconds”. This prove that have achieved my main goal which was to get my Audience/user to feel as they can access the world from just one room and have the feeling freedom and space. however i feel that my user feed back on the forth question (What could I do in-order to improve the interaction.Instead of using a square i recon you could use a coloured dot to make it seem like the person whose interacting with the screen is smaller within the map showing you as a population within the world throughout the billions of people” ). I feel that his information feed back was very good but if i do make those changed it would take away the theory of the message that i am trying to portray, which was to make my audience/user feel as they have got the entire world in control. and if i make the square smaller it would of not make the Audience get the feeling of the power  that they have got as they would have to take bigger step around the room in-order to cover the map of the world.

DESIGN ITERATIONS – Media Space Environment

In-order for my interaction to go through fluently and grab my audiences attentions i figure that i need to find an environment  in (weymouth house) where is suitable for my project to be displayed so that my audience can interact with the interaction without occupying other member of the public’s  path.  As i have learned from the Dorset independence post that it is important that you select the best location for your poster to be displayed.

As you can see on the images about they were two potential location with screens  where my project could be displayed in-order to grab my audience’s attention and  give them space to interact with the interaction on the screen. The location on the top left is my most preferred location for my interaction to be displayed on it is on the main entrance and would be the first digital screen that the audience would observe. it has also got a lot of space for space for my audience to manoeuvre and experiment with the interaction. The picture on the top right shows the amount of space that my audience has got.

however the picture on the bottom would have been a good choice for my interaction to be displayed but as its in the canteen/Coffee shop. the table that you can see and the chairs would not give my audience enough space to manoeuvre with the screen at they need to move around the room, also the camera will pick up peoples faces who would not take notice or in the right time to interact with screen. and the audience has got a lot more digital screens and other digital activity to interact with.

10801483_1046241192056467_988268901091355495_n 10347563_1046241198723133_8814755284449398199_n

the photo on the left these would be the audiences who would not be in the right time or too busy to interact with the interaction that is in progress on the screen in the canteen of weymouth house, also the  picture on the right explains the other distraction that the audience would have over the processing interaction. so i believe that i have made the right choice by choosing not to use this area of weymouth house to display my project. Because although it may seen like the most busiest it is however the area where my project will get the least attention and find audience who would want to or have the time to interact with with.

I have load the image of the world (background) into void setup, also in the 2nd screen shot i had set the size of the background to exactly the same size as the canvas.

Screen Shot 2015-01-24 at 03.01.41

At this step at this i am scaling the background in-order for it to fill the canvas without having  any gaps.

for the stroke weight/ which was the to enhance the out line on the rectangle so the it is more visible for my audience/user. I also made the color in the box transparent so the user can also have a vision of on the map of the country that they are hovering over.

This is what the box looks like that represents the audience in the digital world. As you can see that it is transparent  and as it hoovers around each country it gives you  clearer idea of where roughly you are and it looks more refined.

I choose to use the face tracking because i was having slight bugging issues with the other cascade for example  the nose, eyes and full-body. the nose tracking was too small and would not detect the nose if it is more than 2 meters away, and was picking up random object around the area.

DESIGN ITERATIONS – Weymouth house Processing final idea updated.

I have decided to take a slightly different direction for my interaction idea, But I have kept some of the basic concepts the same for example. an interaction where the user can be connected to world from one place (a small room) also how the media can help the user to feel that they have got total control of the world from just one place. I have decided to change a small idea of where the media world is on a blank screen on a canvas and that is gives the user a more free feeling that they can access anywhere in a room also i have decided to alter what refers to the user a box on the screen. what have i done is changed the blank canvas into the global atlas and the rectangle box that represents the user  i have made it into a 25% transparent.

The reason why i have changed blank screen into a global map is because i believe that the map will give the user a more basic  understanding of the Interaction is trying to portray to the audience, it will grab their attention much more easier. also i have made the rectangle box transparent so wherever or which country/county the user decided to step into will be transparent and the user  can see where they are locating them selves. I believe that this idea will link massively towards my brief and most of all my media theory (media space) as the interaction it self create it own idea of mediated space, for example it tells the user  that they can travel around the world form just one space like walking around a room and locating every part of the world. this gives a relation of how powerful and how much of an impact that the social has got towards the world of people who are in  poverty. believe that this  interaction will give the people/user who are interacting that they are navigating across the world. and it would be as a game for  many people /user as they will get drawn from the camera picking  up their movements.

Screen Shot 2015-01-25 at 16.55.37Screen Shot 2015-01-25 at 16.56.02

The image above is was my first main idea for the interaction. on the left rectangle box is smaller this happens when the user is further away from the camera and as the user gets closer to the camera the bigger rectangle expand.

10524362_1046021215411798_7043853688790099190_n 1551545_1046021272078459_2380445257566599943_n10945013_1046021378745115_7621550612770139703_n

The rough sketch about is an idea of how my audience/user will be interacting with the processing interaction. as you can see in the first image on the left the further away that the user’s away form the camera  the smaller that box on the screen gets, and the box will track the movement of the user as if they were exploring the world. also in the third sketch it illustrate  the that the closer they user/audience approach the camera the bigger the rectangle will appear.  You can see that i have made the colour in the rectangle transparent so the part part of the world that they are exploring.

DESIGN ITERATIONS – build up idea

The main idea that I am going to go for my interaction project would be How the media space can give u the ability to do thing that you can not achieve in reality or proven difficult. I am going to go for the Opencv box tracking idea where the box will track the movement of the user in a blank canvas of Opencv this will be operate by the rectangle box will be representing the user and wherever the user move a box will follow them within the media space (canvas) and the user can access every corner of the canvas without obstacles in their way. I feel that project will relate extremely well to Mediated Environment (media space) the blank canvas on the screen operated in processing will symbolise how the people in poverty feels as they have entered the social media world where they have got a large quantity of control without obstacle. And the rectangle box will symbolise the people who are in the poverty/user. And the fact that the media space have given total control to the users and without any boundaries as you step into to the world.

Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 20.38.08 Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 20.37.45

The image on the left symbolises the media world and the image in the right symbolise the reality. As you can see that in the Mediated Environment (media space) you can see that the rectangle box is on a blank background and that user has got an unlimited space to travel in with out any obstacle to stop the user. But in the reality image on the right the user can not engaged in every section of that room because of the obstacle that is restricting the persons freedom in-order to get to every corner of the room. Where is in the media environment the user has got a large quantity of space. this gives the user a sense of mental space and how they can over come obstacle in reality

flip/mirror the camera. so the interaction for example the rectangle box is directly opposite the Audience/ user.

DESIGN ITERATIONS – open CV experimenting.

Here i was experiment with flipping the camera interaction on  Open cv processing. by Mirror the camera so that rect box is directly opposite to the user.

In-order for me to be able accomplished i have enabled to the width and height as  ( x = width-x-h; )  also as you  an see in the images and the codes below that i have enabled the “image(cam, 0, 0, 1024, 768);”  So that the user can see their reflection.
